The maxi dress was a popular fashion item that

because it followed the mini dress, another popular young woman’s fashion craze. The mini
dress was very revealing and uncomfortable for most
women.
The mini dress was often worn by a slight young
woman, like Goldie Hawn on the TV show Laugh-In. The maxi dress was typically long and
flowing, and often it was a floral print.
The whole effect of the maxi dress was feminine
and retro. The maxi dress has reappeared several times as a fashion trend or craze and is
actually quite delightful.

For most teens in the seventies, the maxi dress was a chance to
look like a person from the nineteenth century. Many times, it was the first time for the young baby boomer
to wear such an item of clothing.
The maxi dress was also popular on television shows and movies
from the era. Magnum PI, for instance, had several of the guest stars clad in a Hawaiian floral maxi dress.
The effect was very tropical, laid back, and straight from the islands. Star Trek, the television show, had
several women with maxi dresses, and the effect was very new, different, and other-worldly in that
case.
A classic movie that featured the maxi dress from the nineteenth
century was ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’. The women in that film were strong and Western, and wore
great maxi dresses. The effect of the rough-clad yet maxi dress worn by Katherine Ross was very endearing and
homey.
She is right at home with the character of Paul Newman as Butch
Cassidy. She is very lovely in the old-fashioned maxi dress and can swing on a rope swing with him, and has
not a care in the world. A woman could wear a maxi dress and be ready to plow a field, ride a horse, or
tackle other hard jobs.
As with most other female fashion crazes or fads, the maxi dress
looks really strange to people today. The dress was pretty odd at the time, too. It was liberating at the
time, and had very much an air of rebellion compared with other looks of the
time.
The maxi dress is very modest yet feminine. One doesn’t have to
worry as much about footwear, stockings, or shaved legs. The maxi dress has endured since that time, for
those very reasons. Women wear white maxi
dresses now, because they have not gone out of style. They are likely to be popular for years to
come.
